History Tour- Mountain Region

The Mountains Region offers a variety of educational programs designed to excite and educate students!

Depart for Florence, an area rich in Civil War history, and visit Pope’s Tavern which served as a hospital for both Union and Confederate troops. While in the area, visit the W. C. Handy Birthplace, Museum & Library, which pays homage to the “Father of the Blues.”

Travel to Tuscumbia, where you will visit the Alabama Music Hall of Fame to learn about Alabama’s music achievers and their accomplishments. Before leaving the area, visit Helen Keller’s Birthplace, “Ivy Green”. Overnight in the area.

Travel to Huntsville for an incredible educational journey into the history of space exploration at the U.S. Space and Rocket Center. Your next stop is Alabama Constitution Village, where delegates gathered to forge the way for Alabama’s statehood. Visit Burritt On The Mountain - A Living Museum for a glimpse into rural life during the 1850s to 1900s. Your group’s next stops are Early Works Children’s Museum, the south’s largest hands-on history museum, and Sci-Quest, where students can awaken their senses and energize their imagination while learning basic principles of science. Overnight in the area.

Depart for Decatur to tour Cook’s Natural Science Museum, one of the top ten Natural Science Museums in the country according to many of the geologists who have visited the area. Later, visit The Old State Bank, the oldest bank in Alabama and one of only four buildings left standing in the area after the Civil War.

Depart Decatur for Moulton to visit the Jesse Owens Museum and the Oakville Indian Mounds Education Center, the largest Woodland ceremonial Indian mound in Alabama.

Depart Moulton for Hillsboro to visit Pond Spring, the historic plantation home of “Fighting Joe” Wheeler who served in the Confederate Cavalry and the Spanish- American War. Overnight in the area.

Provides extensive collections of beautiful and exotic insects, mounted birds, animals, rocks and minerals, sea shells and coral. Large theatre to view natural science films. Also includes live and interactive exhibits.
