Enjoy canoeing, kayaking, and camping along 44 miles of the Tallapoosa River. It has been designated by the U.S. Department of the Interior as one of the cleanest rivers in the Eastern United States. The river is abundant with wildlife both in and around the water. You may see ducks, raccoons, whitetail deer, and numerous species of waterfowl. The Tallapoosa harbors 120 native fish species, four of which occur nowhere else outside the basin. The river also is home to 31 species of mussel including three federally listed species. Eleven species of crayfish are known to inhabit the Tallapoosa River, as well as salamanders and frogs. The best fishing is for spotted bass and bream. Red-eye bass, black bass, crappie, carp and catfish are also found. The best time to paddle is year-round. Each season offers many sights, activities and photo opportunities.
