Cycling – Road Route – Montgomery – Pintala Ride

This scenic ride around the sparsely traveled roads of southern Montgomery County gives the rider a sampling of well-paved roads, shady lanes, neatly kept farmland and a healthy dose of moss-covered oak trees. The area is popular with local cyclists and weekly rides often start on the weekend from the Pintlala Baptist Church. The church start point is a good springboard for longer exploratory rides.

This route is part of the Montgomery Bicycle Club’s Fall Jim Glassner Memorial Challenge. The route described here extends the 27-mile route to take in a short portion of the historic Old Federal Road.

Variations:
It is possible to extend the ride to 47 miles, taking in the shady roads south of the crossroads at Fleta and returning on the reverse portion of the roads used for the Montgomery Bicycle Club’s Metric (100-km) century route. It is possible to follow the markings for the Metric century, but as the Metric doubles back onto itself, it could be confusing to follow.
Route Legs:
  • Turn right out of Pintlala Baptist Church Parking lot. Cross US 31 at signal and continue east.
  • CR 24 ends at Butler Mill.
  • Cross US 331. Store at intersection of US 331.
  • Follow split to right immediately after convenience store.
  • Begin a long stretch of pretty road. (Pass County Shop Rd. at 8.3 mi. Shortcut back to Butler Mill) Look for street sign for Sprague Junction at 9.3 mi.
  • Cross US 331.
  • Turn right for 34-mi. loop. (Left for 47-mi. option. See 47-mile Route sheet.)

  • Liberty Church Ts into Pettus. (47-mile option rejoins here from right (south)).
  • Pettus Ts into US 31. (Fast traffic on road. Use caution. Note: Right will return to Pintlala Baptist Church).
  • Next right.
  • Follow Tabernacle right at T.
  • Right at T. This is the Historic Federal Road.
  • Right at T, again. Historic marker at corner.
