Cherokee Rock Village

Sandrock also called Cherokee Rock Village is located in Northeastern Alabama in Cherokee County. It is situated on the southern end of Lookout Mountain between Big Ridge to the west and Shinbone Ridge to the east toward Weiss Lake. Sandrock is approximately 20 miles northeast of Gadsden, AL; 1.5 hours west of Atlanta, GA; approximately 1 hour southwest of Chattanooga, TN. The rock is visible from the parking area and is easily accessible. The area is made up of large, freestanding sandstone islands with a maze of passages & caverns in between. The quality & quantity offered at Sandrock is hard to beat. There is something for every stage of ability from beginner novices to the hard core expert. The approaches are easy & the pitches are between 30 to 60 feet with routes on all sides that typically offer easy access to the top for Tope Rope rigging. Some have permanent bolt anchors. Although Sandrock is best known for its large quantity of outstanding Bouldering problems it is also an excellent Climbing area with many Bolted Sport routes and is challenging enough for Traditional Climbing. Sandrock is not a hot spot for Rappelling but the area is well suited for the activity.
