Jesse OwensTrack and Field / Running

Alabama has produced some of the most famous sports figures ever to walk the earth. Perhaps none of them ever achieved international fame like Jesse Owens. And for good reason. Owens, a native of Oakville, Ala., was not only one of his generation's best athletes, but also one of its most important historical figures. And you can learn all about him at the Jesse Owens Memorial Park in Danville, Ala., where you'll find the Jesse Owens Museum and an authentic re-creation of his childhood home.

But Alabama's track and field legacy doesn't end there. Auburn University and the University of Alabama have combined to win seven NCAA National Championships in track and field. Just recently, the Auburn women won the 2006 National Title, and Alabama Head Coach Harvey Glance was selected as a coach for the 2008 Olympic team. Fielding competitive track and field programs on both the high school and youth levels, the state of Alabama has plenty of speed to burn.

Huntsville's Rocket City Marathon, the Boston Marathon Qualifier for 2008 and 2009, takes place in early December and comes complete with food, entertainment, fellowship, and fun. Some places of interest to visit include the U.S. Space and Rocket Center and the Huntsville Botanical Garden, home of the holiday Galaxy of Lights experience in December. Mercedes-Benz Cotton Row 10K/5K and 1-Mile Run, also in Huntsville, and the Jesse Owens Memorial Run in Moulton, both take place in May. A must-visit is the Jesse Owens Museum near Moulton, which pays homage to one of the greatest athletes in track-and-field history.

Experience a fun-filled weekend of thrilling competition and the pleasurable charm of Southern hospitality during Birmingham's Mercedes Marathon and Half-Marathon in February or the classic Vulcan Run in November. Be sure to visit some of the area's historic museums and attractions and dine out in the city's best restaurants before departing. The Powerman Alabama Duathlon and Whistlestop Duathlon happen each April in nearby Irondale, home of the original Whistlestop Café. Also in April is the Frank Maples Memorial Triathlon in Scottsboro.

Tuscaloosa hosts the Camp Partlow Road Duathlon in March and the Black Warrior Triathlon each June. Along the Gulf Coast, where history, beauty, and recreation come together, Mobile hosts the First Light Marathon in January, the popular Azalea Trail Run in late March and the Challenge of Champions Track Meet in April. The Mullet Man Triathlon occurs in Orange Beach in April and the Alabama Coastal Triathlon in Gulf Shores in May.

So as you traverse our beautiful state from border to border throughout the year, you're never too far from an exhilarating race that will get your heart pumping!
